Babies suckling can be broken down into two phases. Initially they suckle fast and light to stimulate the milk ejection reflex and the milk flow. Once the breast has been sufficiently stimulated, they switch to a slower and deeper suck for the actual feeding phase to get as much milk as quickly as possible.
Medela has always been committed to producing an efficient breast pump that imitates a baby’s natural nursing rhythm. They partnered with the Biochemistry Department of the University of Western Australia in Perth, to develop 2-Phase Expression pumping, converting babies’ intuitive knowledge into technological know-how.
The intelligent 2-Phase Expression technology consists of:
- Stimulation mode (for rapid stimulation of the milk ejection reflex)
- Expression mode (for gentle and efficient expression)
Time to reach milk ejection =
- Baby: approximately 1 minute
- High frequency pattern (Medela Symphony): 1 ½ minutes
- Low frequency pattern (competitor product): approximately 2 ½ minutes
